Chapter 2: Writing Other People’s Stories

Prior to teaching, I spent six years telling other people’s stories through journalism. Writing and editing at the Lincoln Journal Star in Lincoln, Nebraska, honed my attention to detail, adaptability, and ability to manage and meet deadlines — not to mention the skill of communicating with all kinds of people. It was a privilege to contribute to conversations within the community by recounting my neighbors’ triumphs and tragedies, and reporting about local law enforcement required that I develop and sustain lasting relationships with public safety officials. In my subsequent teaching positions, these interpersonal skills have helped me connect with students and colleagues.
